Frost and Fire

from $24.00

Frost and Fire captures a frost-covered American bison in Yellowstone’s Hayden Valley as the first warm light of morning moves across its winter coat. Ice crystals cling to the animal’s fur while sunlight turns the outer edge of its massive silhouette copper and gold.

Available on museum-quality matte paper or as a ready-to-hang glossy metal print.

THE STORY

Fog rested over Hayden Valley that morning when we noticed a bison feeding among the frozen sage near the road. Frost covered its hump and back, catching the light as the sun began to reach across the valley.

I remained inside the vehicle and picked up the lens already within reach. The bison raised its head, looked toward us, and slowly began moving closer.

For a few seconds, everything aligned: the frost, fog, warm morning light, weathered horns, and the quiet gaze of an animal built to endure Yellowstone’s hardest seasons. Even while making the photograph, I knew that exact combination of light and circumstance might never happen again.
